The White Jaguar: Soke Tammy Lewis and the Legacy of the Phoenix
In the disciplined world of martial arts, few titles carry as much weight as Soke, the head of a system. For Tammy Lewis, known in the dojo as “The White Jaguar,” the title is more than a rank; it is a sacred trust and the culmination of a journey that began nearly half a century ago.
Today, Soke Tammy Lewis is making history not just through her formidable collection of world titles, but as a female leader carving out a space for inclusivity and honor in Salem, New York.

A Foundation Forged in Multi-Style Mastery
Tammy’s journey began in 1978, but her path was truly forged at the Dragon Fist Dojo under the tutelage of Shidoshi Stephen F. Douglas Sr. (a 10th Dan under the legendary Ron Van Clief). It was here that she developed the versatility that defines her career.

Unlike many who stick to a single discipline, Lewis has achieved elite rankings across the martial arts spectrum:
- Isshinryu: Godan (5th Dan)
- Soi Nisei Goju: Yondan (4th Dan)
- Shotokan: Sandan (3rd Dan)
- Goju Ryu: Nidan (2nd Dan)
- USA Goju: Shodan (1st Dan)

Rising from the Ashes: The Phoenix System
In 2021, alongside her mentor Master Jon Bottomms, Tammy co-founded the Phoenix Martial Arts and Wellness System in Salem, NY. What started as two dedicated practitioners training in an empty room soon grew into a thriving community.

Their mission was radical in its simplicity: create a dojo where every student, regardless of age or background, is accepted as family. Following the passing of Soke Bottomms in 2024, Tammy ascended to the role of Soke, carrying forward the Warrior Code they established together:
“Honor, Respect, Responsibility, Care, Peace, and Love.”

A Record-Breaking Competitive Reign
While her leadership keeps the dojo grounded, her competitive record is nothing short of historic. In the last few years alone, “The White Jaguar” has dominated the international circuit, particularly in Fitness and Open Forms.
Recent Historic Highlights:
- World Champion Dominance: Back-to-back Grand Champion titles at the Battle of the Dragons World Championships (2024–2026), including the 2026 Female Grand Champion (Over 50).
- Hall of Fame Legacy: A multi-year inductee into the Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the Martial Arts History Hall of Fame in Orlando.
- Leadership Awards: Named Woman of the Year (2024) and Instructor of the Year (2025) at the Old and New Warriors Hall of Fame.

Leading by Example
Soke Tammy Lewis’s impact on the martial arts world transcends her trophy case. By leading the Phoenix Martial Arts and Wellness System, she stands as a beacon for women in a traditionally male-dominated field. She doesn’t just teach techniques; she embodies the “White Jaguar”, possessing the grace of a practitioner and the fierce heart of a protector.

As she moves through 2026, Soke Lewis continues to prove that martial arts is a lifelong journey of evolution. Through her, the legacy of her mentors lives on, and the next generation of “Phoenix” students has a formidable example of what it means to lead with both strength and heart.

I’m beyond humbled and honored to have my story told! I want to personally thank Shidoshi Stephan Douglas Sr. For putting me on this path and changing my life. He gave my life purpose! I am truly blessed 🐦🔥🙏🏼
