Seven Principles to Own Your Martial Arts Journey
In Hapkido, we teach that a stagnant pool breeds disease, while a flowing river generates power. To “Intensify Your Life” is to embrace the principle of Yu (Flowing Water)—never resisting the current of life, but moving through it with such purpose and energy that you become unstoppable.
As a practitioner of the “Way of Coordinated Power,” I invite you to apply these seven principles to your own journey.

1. Master the Law of Inertia (Start Moving!)
In physics and martial arts, a body in motion stays in motion. If you wait for the “perfect” moment to start your training, you will die waiting.
- The Hapkido Perspective: Don’t over-analyze the technique before you’ve even stepped onto the mat. Movement creates its own momentum. Even a small step forward is a victory over the “couch” mentality.
2. Sharpen the Tool (Physical Vitality)
Your body is the primary weapon in the art of living. Strength and conditioning are not just about aesthetics; they are about capability.
- The Warrior’s Edge: Stop debating fitness on a screen and go earn it. The more “gas” you have in the tank, the more adventures you can survive and enjoy.

3. Ignite Your Passion (The Inner Fire)
Find the thing that makes you forget to look at the clock. For many of us, that is the intricate, flowing, and devastatingly effective world of Hapkido.
- The Philosophy: Adulthood often tries to extinguish excitement in favor of “propriety.” Ignore the critics. If a flying kick or a perfect joint lock sets your soul on fire, pursue it with everything you have. “Weird” is just a word used by the bored to describe the passionate.
4. Expand Your Circle (Get Involved)
Hapkido isn’t just a solo endeavor; it is a community (Dojang).
- The Connection: Stepping outside your own ego to help your family, your training partners, or your community provides a joy that no personal achievement can match. A warrior protects others; a master serves them.

5. Weaponize Your Gratitude
Complacency is the silent killer of progress.
- The Insight: Hard times are inevitable, but most of us are surrounded by safety and opportunity. Don’t just “be okay” with it—be ecstatic about it. Use that gratitude as fuel for your next training session.
6. Seek Spiritual Centeredness
Excitement doesn’t have to be chaotic. The most intense power comes from a place of absolute stillness.
- The Foundational Peace: When you are spiritually satisfied—whether through your faith or your internal meditation—you stop wasting energy on the “idiocy” of daily life. You gain a base of operations from which you can launch into life with true focus.

7. The North Star (Set Your Goals)
A martial artist without a goal is just a person sweating in a white suit.
- The Mission: Give your life a background purpose. Whether it’s earning your next belt, mastering a specific throw, or becoming the “Icon” of your own life, keep a motivating stimulus in front of you at all times.

The Secret Ingredient: Enjoy the Fight
At the end of the day, if you aren’t enjoying the process, you won’t stick with it. We designed “Martial Fitness” to break the boring rules of traditional exercise. We don’t want you to be intimidated by the “fitness experts”; we want you to be the Overcomer.
In our world, we bring back the guts, the attitude, and the sheer fun of being the toughest person in the room. You should enjoy building your brain and your body. The more fun you have, the more you show up. The more you show up, the faster you grow.
Stop surviving your life. Start intensifying it.
