The Heavy Hands Principle
By Sifu Keith Fanning
In the Blue Dragon Combat System, there is a concept we place enormous importance on, We call it Heavy Hands.
This isn’t a slogan, and it’s certainly not about ego or theatrics. It’s a principle forged through decades of training, conditioning, and hard-earned experience. The heavy hand is about effect not appearance.

I often say to my students:
“When I hit you, you stay hit.”
That line tends to get attention, but it’s not bravado. It’s responsibility. If you choose to strike another human being, that strike must have purpose. Anything less is negligence.
Penetration, Not Surface Power
One of the biggest mistakes I see in modern striking is an obsession with speed, noise, and surface impact. Slaps that look fast. Strikes that sound impressive. Movements that photograph well but fail under pressure.
In the Blue Dragon system, we don’t train to hit at the target.
We train to hit through it..
A correct strike penetrates the structure, disrupting internally as much as externally.
That kind of power doesn’t come from tension or brute force. It comes from alignment, relaxation, breath, timing, and correct body mechanics working as one unit.
The hand drops heavy because the body is connected.
The damage is done before the opponent understands what happened.

Conditioning the Weapon
A heavy hand is not imagined, it is conditioned.
Over the years, I have developed and taught a series of conditioning courses designed to prepare the body for real impact, real resistance, and real consequences.
These include:
- Iron Palm
- Iron Fist
- Iron Finger
- Iron Head
- Iron Leg
- Golden Bell Shield
Each method has a purpose, and none of them have shortcuts.
Conditioning builds trust between the mind and the body. When you know your tools are prepared, hesitation disappears and hesitation is often the difference between success and failure in a real encounter.
This type of training doesn’t make you reckless.
It makes you certain.

Every Strike Is a Break
In our system, every strike is also trained as a break.
That standard exists for a reason. If a technique cannot break, it cannot be trusted. Breaking is not a party trick or a demonstration for applause it is a testing method.
“It tells the truth”.
When a strike has been proven against structure, resistance, and material, it earns its place in the system.
That way, when it is needed under pressure, it has already been battle-tested.
A strike that can break is a strike that can end a confrontation decisively and fast.

Fluidity Creates Weight
One of the great paradoxes of power is this: the heavier the hand becomes, the more relaxed the movement must be.
Tension slows you down. It telegraphs intent. It wastes energy. Inside Blue Dragon, we train for fluid, uninterrupted motion—rooted through the ground, driven by the body, and delivered without warning.
This is not chaos.
It is trained violence, refined through discipline and understanding.

Power Comes With Responsibility
With real power comes real responsibility.
A heavy hand is not for intimidation, bullying, or ego. It is for moments when avoidance has failed and action is unavoidable. It is about resolving a situation quickly, efficiently, and decisively—so no more damage needs to be done.
Train hard.
Condition properly.
Strike with intent.
Because in the Blue Dragon Combat System, nothing is taught unless it works and nothing is used unless it is necessary.
That is the standard I live by.
That is the way of the Blue Dragon combat system.
