JEAN-LUC LACOMBE

Empowering Lives Through the Martial Arts

The Journey and Vision of Jean-Luc Lacombe

There is an era when martial arts schools often compete for attention with flash and trends, Jean-Luc Lacombe serves as a reminder of what truly sustains our art: discipline, service, and a commitment to developing people, not just fighters.

With over 25 years of training and more than 15 years of instructing experience, Lacombe’s journey through the martial arts has been defined not by shortcuts, but by consistency. Beginning his training in the early 2000s, he progressed through the ranks of ITF Tae-Kwon-Do under Veronica De Santos, earning his 4th Dan black belt while embracing the deeper responsibilities that come with leadership. His path later expanded into the Superfoot System under Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, where he achieved his 2nd Dan, further strengthening his understanding of sport karate, kickboxing, and functional movement.

Today, Lacombe is the Owner and Head Instructor of Brooklin Martial Arts, a school built on a simple but powerful mission: to empower lives through the martial arts. Under his leadership, Brooklin Martial Arts has grown into more than a training facility—it is a community hub where discipline, confidence, and character are developed side by side.

What sets Lacombe apart is his belief that martial arts must be accessible to all. Through a unique partnership with Community Connection and the Town of Whitby, Brooklin Martial Arts offers affordable programming directly out of local school gymnasiums, removing barriers that often prevent families from participating. This commitment reflects Lacombe’s background in Early Childhood Education, where he graduated with honours, and his understanding that strong foundations—both physical and emotional—are built early.

Programs like Brooklin Buddies (ages 5–7) focus on age-appropriate drills that build coordination, focus, and confidence while reinforcing essential life skills such as listening, setting boundaries, and social problem-solving. Youth, teen, adult, and family classes expand on these foundations through a blended curriculum rooted in ITF Tae-Kwon-Do, while integrating elements of Shotokan Karate, Kobudo, Sport Karate, Kickboxing, and modern self-defence. As a recognized member club of WAKO Canada, Brooklin Martial Arts also provides a pathway for students interested in competitive sport.

Lacombe’s influence extends well beyond the dojang. As the Ontario Director of the American Breaking & Combative Tae‑Kwon‑Do Federation, a WAKO-certified coach and official, and a 2026 Ontario Winter Games coach, he continues to support the growth of martial arts at a provincial and national level. In 2025, he made a powerful debut in competitive breaking, earning an SOSMAI championship in concrete power hand and arm breaking and a top-four finish at the ISKA World Championships.

Recognition has followed, but never defined him. Brooklin Martial Arts has earned multiple community awards, including Gold and Platinum honours in Whitby and Oshawa. At the same time, Lacombe himself was named Best Martial Arts Instructor in the 2025 Whitby Readers’ Choice Awards. Yet his proudest milestones are not trophies or titles—they are moments like overseeing his school’s first black belt grading in 2025 and watching students carry martial arts values into their daily lives.

At the heart of Lacombe’s teaching philosophy is a belief in equitable training. Every student, regardless of age or ability, is encouraged to strive for personal excellence. “No one sits on the bench,” he often says. The culture at Brooklin Martial Arts is one of perseverance and unity—we don’t give up, we team up.

Through outreach initiatives such as Brooklin Blitz and Team Up, Lacombe and his students have helped feed hundreds of families and raised over 500 meals for Feed the Need Durham. These efforts reflect the deeper lesson he teaches: martial arts is not just about learning to fight, but about learning to serve.

In a time when the martial arts world is evolving rapidly, Jean-Luc Lacombe remains grounded in the timeless principles that have guided generations before him. His work reminds us that true mastery is not measured by rank alone, but by the positive impact we leave on our students, our communities, and the lives we empower along the way.
