Personal Leadership Philosophy of a Taekwondo Teacher by Grand Master Jong Sung Kim

My Personal Leadership Philosophy

To be a teacher, who inspires my students to have a strong sense of self-worth. To motivate and encourage my students to reach beyond what they felt they could achieve.

Philosophy Development Reflection

Reflecting on my Personal Leadership Philosophy, I really took some time to think about what I believe a leader means to me personally. I believe that you cannot lead others unless you have a strong sense of who you are and what your values are.  A personal philosophy of life draws from purposeful reflection over, let us say, what one values, genuinely believes, often does, cares about, respects, is curious about, is comfortable with, listens to, spends time on, and hopes to inspire. This resonates with me in the sense that I believe our personal philosophy is our life values, beliefs, and purpose. I want to inspire through my vision and motivate by leading by example and/ or being a role model.

I did not use a specific source to determine my Personal Leadership Philosophy. However, I do feel that it is directly influenced by my current and past teachers and mentors. They gave detailed explanations on how to think about developing a personal leadership philosophy. I decided to review my strengths and take notes on what I felt was important to me.

Because of their leadership and mentoring I have developed the personal belief that a leader has specific qualities.  As a leader, I feel many things are important. For example, being open-minded and able to see other’s perspectives is particularly important to me. Being able to communicate thoughts clearly between you and your team effectively in a positive way is another important part. I realize that I am the type of person that genuinely likes to know my team because I feel it is a true way of understanding them and a better way for me to know how to lead. It is amazing how a simple how are you or how is your family; makes a difference to someone. I do this often with people because I feel in life people get too busy and forget what truly matters. This is at the core of who I am as a person and the values I hope to share.
