About Haemukwan Hapkido Techniques by Grand Master Richard Hackworth

Haemukwan Hapkido is a composite martial art that adopts techniques from other martial arts. Haemukwan Hapkido utilizes kicks similar to TaeKwonDo, throws similar to Judo and joint locks found in Jujitsu. Haemukwan Hapkido teaches seamless transitions between techniques where you learn to flow like water. To become a black belt in Haemukwan Hapkido you must become a well rounded martial artist with a varied arsenal of skills. The foundation skills of Haemukwan Hapkido include Falls, Rolls, Striking & Kicking, Joint Locks and Throws.

One of the first skill that you will learn in Haemukwan Hapkido is how to fall. This is the first thing Haemukwan Hapkido students are taught because it is essential to be able to hit the ground and bounce back up unharmed. Haemukwan Hapkido teaches specific ways to break your fall from every direction. All other techniques are dangerous to practice if you don’t know how to fall first.

The next essential skill taught in Haemukwan Hapkido is how to roll like a ball. Rolling is another important technique of Haemukwan Hapkido because it allows you to escape dangerous situations and spring to your feet in a ready position with a minimum of effort. In Haemukwan Hapkido rolling correctly is just as important as falling correctly to prevent injury during training and in self defense situations. Haemukwan Hapkido rolling techniques allow you to escape injury and move without fear when impacting a hard surface.

In Haemukwan Hapkido you learn to Strike and Kick with conviction. Haemukwan Hapkido kicks and punches are similar to those of traditional TaeKwonDo. Both are Korean martial arts and many martial artists practice both. Haemukwan Hapkido kicks tend to be powerful using full extension of the leg and hip. Haemukwan Hapkido punches are also strong and generated from the hip while shifting the body toward your opponent to maximize the power of the strike.

Haemukwan Hapkido is most famous for its lightning fast joint lock techniques that can shatter a bone or joint instantly. This is what distinguished Haemukwan Hapkido from other martial arts. Haemukwan Hapkido teaches intricate maneuvers to trap opponents in uncomfortable joint locks. These are primarily focused in the wrist, elbow and shoulder. These techniques are highly effective and take very little effort to learn when practiced repeatedly.

Haemukwan Hapkido also uses leverage throws. Haemukwan Hapkido throws are similar to Judo throws but maximize the use of off balancing the opponent so that very little power is needed to properly execute the throw. Haemukwan Hapkido throws involve pushing, pulling and maneuvering to gain a leverage advantage over your opponent. Getting beneath an opponent’s center of gravity is also emphasized in Haemukwan Hapkido. These throwing techniques are potent when combined with Haemukwan Hapkido joint locks and strikes.

Haemukwan Hapkido is a martial art that tests the limits of your flexibility and agility. Always stretch well before and after practicing Haemukwan Hapkido. Learn techniques well before moving on to the next one. Haemukwan Hapkido is much more about technique than strength or speed. Haemukwan Hapkido is an intricate and potentially dangerous martial art. It should only be practiced in a controlled setting under the supervision of a qualified Haemukwan Hapkido instructor. Exercise extreme caution when performing Haemukwan Hapkido joint locks, strikes and throws.
