Master Stephen Scott A Legacy of Leadership and Martial Arts Mastery
Master Stephen Scott stands as an impressive leadership figure in the martial arts world, a testament to decades of unwavering dedication, rigorous training, and profound leadership. With a career spanning over 49 years in martial arts and 23 years in military and law enforcement, his impressive background is a powerful blend of discipline, practical experience, and a deep understanding of human development.

Master Scott’s martial arts journey began in 1976 with Okinawan Shuri-Ryu, where he trained under the esteemed Hanshi John L. Jelks. Jelks himself was a direct student of legendary figures like Victor Moore and Grandmaster Robert A. Trias, firmly placing Master Scott within a lineage of true martial arts pioneers. By 1986, his dedication to Shuri-Ryu had earned him a 3rd Dan. This formative period laid the groundwork for a broader exploration of martial disciplines.
The mid-1980s marked a pivotal expansion in Master Scott’s training as he embarked on the paths of Taekwondo and Hapkido under the tutelage of Grandmaster Robert Owens. This diversification not only broadened his skill set but also deepened his understanding of different martial philosophies and applications. His commitment to excellence was evident in his competitive career during the mid-80s and 90s, where he consistently achieved success, securing multiple State, Military, and National Titles. This competitive spirit, forged in the crucible of national-level tournaments, refined his techniques and instilled an even greater sense of strategic thinking and resilience.

Beyond the dojang, Master Scott’s life has been defined by a profound commitment to service. His ten years in the United States Navy and subsequent twelve years with the Department of Defense provided him with invaluable experience in high-pressure environments, further honing his leadership abilities, critical thinking, and disciplined approach to challenges. This real-world experience undoubtedly enriched his martial arts practice, grounding theoretical principles in practical application and self-defense strategies.
A significant chapter in Master Scott’s development unfolded during the early 2000s until 2012, while he was stationed in Germany with the US Department of Defense. During this period, he had the extraordinary opportunity to train under the direct guidance of Grandmaster Hwang-Yong Kang and Hapkido Grandmaster Soon-Ki Song. Grandmaster Soon-Ki Song is particularly noteworthy, recognized as one of the top fifty Hapkido Grandmasters in the history of the art. Training under such luminaries provided Master Scott with an unparalleled depth of knowledge and refinement in Hapkido, a martial art known for its circular movements, joint locks, and sophisticated self-defense techniques.

Today, Master Stephen Scott holds the distinguished rank of 7th Dan in Taekwondo (KukiKiWon, World Taekwondo Masters Association) and 6th Dan in Hapkido (Korea Hapkido Central Association). These ranks are not merely badges of honor but represent a lifetime of tireless dedication, continuous learning, and mastery of complex martial arts systems.

His vast experience, coupled with his background in military and law enforcement, positions Master Scott as an exceptional leader and instructor. He is deeply committed to fostering personal growth and well-being through the time-honored principles of Hapkido. His mission is clear: to empower individuals with discipline, respect, and responsibility, while embracing the harmony and inherent strength found in circular movement and practical self-defense.
Master Scott’s leadership extends beyond his direct teaching. He actively contributes to the national martial arts community, currently serving as the Arizona State Director for the USA Hapkido Union. In this role, he plays a crucial part in promoting Hapkido, ensuring its continued growth, and upholding its core values across the state.

Master Stephen Scott’s journey is a compelling narrative of continuous evolution and unwavering dedication. From his early days in Shuri-Ryu to his current leadership roles in Taekwondo and Hapkido, he embodies the true spirit of a martial artist, a lifelong learner, a formidable practitioner, and an inspiring leader committed to empowering others.
