The Journey of a Martial Artist with Grand Master Ronald Stone

From rookie to legend, discover the four hidden stages of a martial artist’s life in Hapkido and beyond.

The Journey of a Martial Artist with Grand Master Ronald Stone
What if I told you that becoming a true martial artist has nothing to do with six-pack abs, flying kicks, or looking like Bruce Lee in his prime? What if I told you the real endgame is sitting in a wheelchair at 100 years old… and still outranking every fighter in the room? Yeah, welcome to the reality check nobody puts in the movies.

When most people picture martial arts mastery, their brains go straight to the Bruce Lee archetype: young, ripped, lightning-fast, and capable of taking on an army of bad guys before lunch. That image is burned into pop culture so deeply that even seasoned practitioners sometimes forget that martial arts is not just about the prime years. It is about the journey, the evolution, and the transformation that spans decades.

Grandmaster Ronald Stone, speaking for the United USA Hapkido Union, breaks down this evolution into something he calls “the journey of the martial artist.” And if you think it stops at being the coolest fighter in the dojo, you’re missing the entire second half of the story.

Let’s be real—when you’re 18, fresh on the mat, you think you’re invincible. Stone admits he started in 1970 with exactly that mindset. No thoughts of arthritis, hair loss, or reduced reflexes. Just the raw belief that martial arts was a one-way ticket to superhuman status. But here’s the truth bomb: that stage is temporary.

Level 1: The Protected
This is where it all begins. You’re untrained, uninformed, and in need of guidance. You are literally “the protected,” learning basic stances, figuring out how not to trip over your own feet during drills, and probably mispronouncing half the Korean terms. Your job here is not to fight epic battles. Your job is to absorb knowledge and learn to defend yourself in the simplest ways possible.

In many ways, being a beginner is like being a white belt in life—you’re safe under the wing of someone who knows better. You’re there to be shaped, molded, and, yes, protected.

Level 2: The Guardian
Stick around long enough, and your skills solidify. You’re now “the Guardian,” which means you can protect yourself and maybe your family. You’re not running a tournament yet, but you’ve got some authority. You might even start helping beginners find their footing.

Guardians are essential because they keep the Protected from quitting. They are the bridge between raw newbies and full-blown warriors. They know enough to hold their own but still have more to learn from the tier above them.

Level 3: The Warrior
Ah, here’s the Hollywood stage. This is where you peak physically. You’re strong, fast, and dangerous in the best way possible. You can lead large groups, train soldiers, and even shape the competitive scene by running tournaments and seminars.

But the Warrior stage is not just about your body—it’s about leadership. You are no longer just defending yourself; you are shaping an entire martial arts culture. You carry the weight of the Guardians under you and the trust of the Scholars above you.

The catch? This stage doesn’t last forever. No matter how disciplined you are, the day will come when your joints ache, your reaction time slows, and the explosive speed you had at 25 just isn’t there anymore. That’s where the next transformation comes in.

Level 4: The Scholar
The Scholar is where legends are made. This is the stage most people never even think about when they start martial arts, but it is the one that truly defines legacy. A Scholar has been a Guardian, has been a Warrior, and has lived to pass on the knowledge to future generations.

Here’s the twist—at this stage, your value is not measured in how high you can kick or how many push-ups you can do. It’s measured in what you’ve contributed to the art. Have you written articles? Have you created or refined techniques? Have you taught seminars that shaped students across the world?

Grandmaster Stone recalls a female judo grandmaster, one of the first students of Jigoro Kano himself, who reached her 90s and still taught. By her 100th birthday, she was a 10th Dan and taught from her wheelchair. Her voice carried more authority than any spinning kick could.

That is the ultimate truth of martial arts—it is not a sport you age out of. It is a culture, a philosophy, and a lifetime commitment.

Why This Matters for Hapkido and Beyond
Hapkido, with its blend of joint locks, throws, and strikes, is uniquely positioned to embody this journey. Unlike arts that focus solely on high-impact athleticism, Hapkido emphasizes adaptability. A young practitioner may thrive on speed, but an older master thrives on precision.

Grandmaster Stone’s breakdown of these four stages (Protected, Guardian, Warrior, Scholar) is a roadmap that every martial artist should understand. It changes how we train, how we respect our elders in the art, and how we measure success.
Because here’s the harsh reality—if your only definition of “good” is being the fastest, strongest fighter in the room, your career has an expiration date. But if your definition includes teaching, innovating, and preserving the art, your influence will last long after your body slows down.

The Real Takeaway
We live in a culture obsessed with the Warrior stage. Social media feeds are full of sparring clips, flashy kicks, and highlight reels. But you almost never see the Scholars. They’re not trending on TikTok, but they’re the reason the art even exists for the next generation.

If you’re serious about your martial arts journey, take this advice: train like a Warrior, think like a Scholar, and never forget that every Guardian and Protected depends on you to keep the art alive.

Because one day, it won’t be about the medals, the belts, or the fight records. It will be about whether your voice carries enough weight that an entire room of fighters—Guardians, Warriors, and Protected alike—stop and listen when you speak.

So here’s the question: when your time as a Warrior ends, will you quietly fade away… or will you be the Scholar everyone still bows to?
