The Guardian Program: Street-Smart Safety for a Modern World
By Sifu Keith Fanning
In 2013, I launched The Guardian Program with a clear goal: to give ordinary people the tools to stay safe in an increasingly unpredictable world. Originally a grassroots safety initiative, the program has now been reimagined for 2025—and is being rolled out across Ireland and the UK in schools, offices, and corporate environments.

At a time when public safety concerns are on the rise, The Guardian Program is offering something essential: a clear, practical, and reality-based approach to personal security and situational awareness.
Decades of Real-World Experience
With over 44 years of martial arts training, my life’s work has centered around understanding conflict—how to avoid it, manage it, and respond effectively when it can’t be avoided. Over the years, I’ve trained numerous security professionals in control and restraint tactics, threat response, and violence management, helping ensure that those working on the front lines are prepared for real-world challenges.
My close collaborator and long-time student, Ray Cleary, has trained with me since 2010. With over 30 years of experience in the security industry, Ray now serves as Operations Director and Staff Trainer for a major multinational security company. His extensive field experience and leadership are instrumental in the modern rollout of the Guardian Program. In fact, years ago, I was employed by Ray’s former company to train his staff—proof of our shared commitment to professional standards and street-ready effectiveness.
Together, we’ve rebuilt the Guardian Program from the ground up to ensure it meets today’s safety needs with both simplicity and strategic depth.
What the Program Delivers
The Guardian Program is built on proven, real-world principles and designed for people from all walks of life—students, professionals, educators, and frontline staff alike. The training is rooted in clarity and adaptability, with each module engineered to be simple to understand yet effective under pressure.
Here’s a more detailed look at what the program covers:
1. Dynamic Risk Assessment
Participants learn how to perform rapid situational assessments. This means evaluating the environment, identifying possible threats, and recognizing key cues that indicate potential violence or aggression. We teach how to assess intent, observe body language, and weigh the best course of action—whether that means disengaging, creating distance, or preparing for a protective response.
The first rule of staying safe is knowing when something doesn’t feel right—and acting on it before things escalate.

2. Spatial Awareness & Environmental Positioning
You’ll be trained to develop an instinctive understanding of your surroundings. This includes identifying exits, obstacles, blind spots, and areas of cover. We focus on how to position yourself in a room, on a street, or in a crowd to reduce vulnerability and increase safety. This training helps individuals become more alert without being anxious—confident in their awareness.
Where you stand—and what you’re standing next to—can mean the difference between vulnerability and control.
3. Recognizing Pre-Attack Indicators
Violent incidents rarely happen without warning. The program teaches how to identify behavioral red flags such as scanning, pacing, clenching fists, verbal escalation, or target fixation. Understanding these indicators empowers participants to act early—either to defuse, disengage, or prepare for protective action.
Learning to “read the room” can stop a situation before it becomes a confrontation.

4. Verbal De-Escalation Techniques
Participants are taught how to communicate calmly, clearly, and assertively under pressure. This includes tone, body posture, choice of words, and managing personal emotions. We cover how to defuse anger, redirect aggression, and avoid becoming a target—all without appearing weak or uncertain.
Sometimes, the right word or gesture at the right time can end a confrontation before it begins.
5. Exit Strategies & Disengagement
A major focus of the program is on leaving safely—physically and psychologically. You’ll learn how to create space, use natural barriers, and disengage without provoking further hostility. We also address what to say, how to move, and how to involve bystanders or authorities when appropriate.
In any conflict, your safest win is the one you walk away from unharmed.
6. Controlled Physical Response
For those rare situations where physical conflict is unavoidable, we teach functional, pressure-tested responses designed for simplicity and effectiveness. These include blocking, breaking free from grabs, creating space, and using minimal-force techniques to escape danger. No acrobatics—just efficient, natural movements that work when your adrenaline is high and time is short.
It’s not about fighting—it’s about protecting yourself and escaping to safety.

7. Scenario-Based Drills
The Guardian Program uses real-life scenarios to train both the mind and the body. These include mock encounters in hallways, stairwells, parking areas, office spaces, or public transport settings. This type of experiential learning cements the skills and helps participants respond instinctively when faced with real challenges.
We don’t just talk about it—we simulate it, so you know what it feels like before it really happens.

8. Legal and Ethical Boundaries
We include training on the legal use of force, appropriate responses, and ethical decision-making. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of where the legal line is, how to stay within it, and what’s considered reasonable force in self-protection situations. We also touch on documentation and reporting for those in professional roles.
It’s not just about surviving—it’s about doing the right thing and staying protected legally.
Whether you’re a student, office worker, team leader, or someone simply concerned about personal safety, the program meets you where you are—and gives you what you need to stay safer on the street.
Smart Simplicity, Advanced Mindset
At the heart of the Guardian Program is a core belief: Keep things simple, but train the mind like a professional. That means no fluff, no gimmicks—just focused, effective training built for the reality of the world we live in.
It’s not about turning people into fighters. It’s about helping them become more aware, more confident, and better prepared to handle what life might throw their way.

The Road Ahead
We’re proud to be bringing this program into schools and office environments, where safety training is often minimal or overlooked. This isn’t fear-based teaching—it’s empowerment. The Guardian Program doesn’t just prepare individuals; it builds a culture of awareness, prevention, and community resilience.
In today’s world, conflict can arise without warning. The Guardian Program ensures that when it does, you won’t just be a bystander—you’ll be ready.
